Un e-Book, libro electrónico(o digital) y también llamado ecolibro, puede ser una obra individual o en formato digital, es decir, un dispositivo utilizado para leer libros en formato digital. Los libros digitales tienen el aspecto de una pantalla, una pantalla que imita la forma de un libro (aunque tambien pueden ser leidos en un ordenador si se dispone de un Software específico). Este tipo de formato tiene ventajas como el acceso universal, es decir, todo el mundo que disponga de este Software puede acceder a todo tipo de libros; Su disponibilidad es inmediata, su precio es más bajo, nos aporta nuevas utilidades como su interactividad, edición de formato básico... es fácil de usar, es práctico y transportable... tiene ciertas desventajas como las consecuencias para la salud de nuestra vista. Estos libros electrónicos son una nueva forma de lectura, que responde a un afán de extender el ámbito de lectura a un sector mayor y también de adaptación a nuevos tiempos, esto supone una revolución técnica en la reproducción y lectura de textos. Hay varias formas de convertir un libro normal y corriente en un libro electrónico, las principales vías a traves de las que podemos lograr un libro digital son:

• Escanear documentos y convertirlos en JPEG o PDF
• Informatizar, o convertirlo en base de datos
• Transcribir a texto ASCII
• Publicar en internet utilizando los denominados códigos HTML para etiquetar, anotar y añadir metadatos (XML)

Se guardan en diversos programas que permiten su lectura, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Reader, PDA (Asistente Digital Personal o dispositivo Palm)... Los libros electrónicos están disponibles en numerosas páginas de internet, ya sean de bibliotecas o editoriales virtuales, webs propias de autores, tiendas; correos electrónicos promocionales... y el método de pago es muy comodo, se pueden pagar con tarjeta a traves de lo que se denomina PayPal. Un libro electrónico, también llamado ecolibro o e-book, entre otros términos, es una nueva forma de expresión mediante el uso de un ordenador, es decir, es una versión digitalizada de un libro impreso en papel.

Tras la consulta de diversas fuentes, Wikipedia señala que se debe hacer una distinción entre los libros electrónicos y el hipertexto. El hipertexto, está destinado a la estructuración de la información a través de enlaces, mientras que un eBook no es más que la digitalización de un libro originariamente editado en papel.

Entre las ventajas de la edición digitalizada del libro se puede encontrar las siguientes:

- La disminución de la tala de árboles, ya que, según la UNESCO son necesarios 786 millones de árboles para generar el papel que consume el mundo en un año.

- Su comodidad, ya que se puede obtener información con mayor rapidez.

- Se puede acceder a otros libros mediante el uso de enlaces.

- Resulta económico hacer una réplica.

- Es dinámico, puesto que se actualiza y adapta al perfil del lector.

Para finalizar hemos decidido citar a Cory Doctorow quien afirma lo siguiente:

“Los libros electrónicos son márketing, esto es, regalar libros electrónicos vende más libros de papel. En Baen Books, que edita un montón de colecciones, se han dado cuenta de que regalar ediciones electrónicas de las anteriores entregas de sus series simultáneamente con el lanzamiento de un nuevo volumen hace que el nuevo libro se venda mucho mejor —y el catálogo también.” Y añade que: “Los libros electrónicos complementan a los libros de papel”.

An e-book is a text stored in a digital way which can be copied and read in a PC, or in a recent portable devices for eBooks. These books can be read by programs which are called readers.

There are basically two steps to build an eBook: prepare the content for conversation, and choose a tool for conversation to Microsoft Reader. All conversation tools require that you have a clean HTML file and marked a sane with the standards defined by the Open eBook Foundation. For more details on these standards visit the Web Open eBook. You can create an eBook in a short space of time (2 or 3 hours) if they have prepared all the necessary parts. Among the items needed include images JPEGs for Home and the Library, as well as other elements that may need eBook. To read eBooks in a PC or poket PC, we have to use a reader program. Nowadays there are two readers available: Microsoft Reader and Glassbook Reader. These programs let us adjust the typography, turn on the pages, use pointers, insert notes, bring texts out , and many other functions necessaries for readding. The books are downloaded from Internet, or can be generated by ourselves. Glassbook read files on PDF; and Microsoft Reader, files on .LIT or Reader which fulfil with OEB rules. These last take up less space than PDF ones. Microsoft give us free machines to turn Word files into Reader, and ReaderWorks company offers machines to turn HTML into Reader. These tools makes very easy turn on Word or HTML files on eBooks.

e-Book consists of electronic content "originating from traditional books, reference material or magazines" that is downloaded from the internet. This digital object is designed to be read on a handheld reading device or even to be listened to from a speech-generating tool.

The newest e-Books include a built in dictionary and search functionality, reference information selection; the ability to highlight text, underline or write comments or margin notes. The multimedia capabilities are also a distinguishable feature of e-Books, which allow stories to come alive with animated graphics and video.

e-Books are produced by many kinds of electronic publishers, from best-seller publishers to university presses and multinational publishing conglomerates. Book production has been largely digital. Writing, editing, layout and pre-press preparations are computerized and the publishing workflow is all network based.

Sometimes e-Books are produced by document scanning with the necessary and adecuate technology which allows to stand quickly but without damaging the original print edition. The image file produced when scanning the book is converted into text format by an OCR programme.

You can read most online books with a conventional web browser. To read some books, however, you must download propietary software, usually free, that delivers a more book-like interface. The major players include Adobe Acrobat e-Book Reader and Microsoft Reader. The newest version of MS Reader can read aloud. Another new software product, the TK3 Reader has limited use in art and poetry publication.

Libraries need a single reader software standard so that all e-Book platforms and devices can read the same e-text file. A standard format does in fact exist: the Open e-Book Publication Structure, currently HTML/XML based. And publishers do in fact produce text in this format, but the text is then translated into propietary formats before sale.

Although it is not necessary to use a reader application or device in order to read an Ebook (most books can be read as PDF files), they are popular because they enable options similar to those of a paper book. An e-Book reader is most tipically handheld electronic device capable of dispalying e-Books. PDAs, pocket PCs, laptops and dedicated readers like Rocket e-Book, Cybook and GoReader are examples of e-Book readers.

Liburu digitala, Wikipediaren arabera, batetik, liburu baten ekoizpen elektronikoa nahiz digitala da (edukiari dagokionean) eta bestetik, liburu elektronikoak irakurri ahal izateko (eta ez bakarrik horretarako) erabiltzen den baliabidea da.

Ez dira Liburu elektronikoa eta digitala nahastu behar. Liburu elektronikoaren kontzeptua, liburu digitala baino zabalagoa da, liburu elektroniko informazio gordetzaile masiboari ere deitu izan baitzaio.

Liburu digitala interneten sorreraren ostean agertu zen, liburu digitalaren ezaugarrietako bat hipermediatikoa izatea da. Testuarekin batera hiperrestekak, soinuak eta argazkiak tarteka daitezke. Honetaz gain interneta bera liburu digital erraldoia da, hainbat eta hainbat testu elkarri lotuak ditu hiperresteken bidez.

Liburu digitalak argitarazteko edo irakurtzeko hainbat programa daude: Microsoft Reader, Adobe Acrobat, E-book generator. Editore programa barrienek HTML lengoaia erabiltzen dute, baina beste formato ezagunak ere erabil ditzateke: PDF, LIT... Hauetan testua argazkiz eta hiperrestekaz osa daiteke. Liburu digitalok ordenagailuan edo Liburu elektroniko baten irakur daitezke.

Liburu elektroniko irakurtzaile fisikoari buruz hitz egiten dugunean, PDA edo sakeleko ordenagailu baten antzeko zerbaiti buruz hitz egiten ari gara. Liburu digitala formatu digitalean gordetako edozein testu da . Pc, ordenagailu mugikor edo E-book-en gailu eramangarrietan kopiatu eta irakurri daitezkeenak: Liburu hauek irakurketa programen bidez irakurtzen dira. Liburu digitala aurrera ateratzeko lehenengo pausoak 1971. urtean eman ziren. Michael Hart izan zen erronka handi honen bultzatzailea. Illinois-eko Unibertsitaterako lanean, mundu mailan ezagunak diren autoreen obra ezberdinak digitalizatu zituen. Modu honetan Shakespeare, Poe edo Dante bezelako idazleen ondarea dohainik eskuragarri ipini zituen modu digitalean. 2002. urtean 2.000 liburutik gora zeuden euskarri berri honetan www.gutenberg.net atarian. 1981. urtera arte itxaron behar izan genuen lehen aldiz xede komertziala zuen idazki elektronikoa ezagutzeko. 2001-ean izan zen ordea; Stephen King eleberri egile famatuak bere azken lanaren formatua, digitala izatea hautatutakoan guztia aldatuko zuena. Gertakari berri honek, berrikuntza sakonak ekarri zituen letren industriara. Batzuen artean, argitaletxe birtualak eratu ziren. According to the Wikipedia, an E-book or electronic book is a digitalized publication which has been created to be comercialised in the Internet. These kinds of books offer us many advantages:

• As there are no paper, no ink and no intermediaries used, buying e-Books from the Internet is much cheaper than doing it from a current shop.
• Finally, it incorporates all the advantages of an electronic file (word search, comment inserting, text highlighting and so on).
• they are very economic.
• There are no frontier limits.

The right protection and the Association with the download computer are also characteristics which E-books contain. Accessing to E-books can be done not only through the dispositive designed to develop this duty but also through anything which has a screen and a memory, which can be a PDA, a PC, a laptop… To gain access to this books, a reader program is always needed. You can download a book reading software into your computer’s PDA and it will turn into a book reader. If you already have a Palm Pilot, Handspring Visor, Windows CE, Pocket PC or anything of the kind, you can start to experience the next great revolution in electronic publishing. In the end, this new reading experience is similar to a paperback. You turn pages just by touching the screen and the text is justified. This way, you can carry your bookshelf in your pocket and you’ll have your favourite books always by your side! Finally, to make an e-book the following steps must be followed:

• Write something worthy about the reading.
• Insert it in Word or in a similar procesor of texts.
• Turn the page into a wide size or even better, change the size of the page into a 8 cm width and 6 cm high. Use a type of letter that could be readable for everyone.
